Who Litters?
  • Males, twice as much as females
  • Males 10 to 20 years old litter most.
  • Males 21-30 are three times more likely to litter than people over 50.
  • Everyone litters at some point in life.
Why do they litter?
  • Convenience - no nearby trash container.
  • Neatness - care more about their cars' appearance than their community's
  • Rationalization - picking up litter creates employment - "It's their job."
  • Total Don't Care attitude - carelessness and selfishness
What are the hazards?
  • Fire - a fire starts every 12 minutes due to litter
  • Safety - 500 to 1,000 people die each year in auto accidents trying to avoid litter on highways
  • Health - litter breeds rats, flies, mosquitoes, etc. They are capable of spreading disease.
  • Wildlife - suffers when litter is washed into streams.
  • Economic - Estimates say we spend over 1 billion dollars each year cleaning up litter. Litter reduces property values. Litter deprives local businesses revenue when their dollars are spent to clean their parking lots, etc., thereby costing us higher prices on the goods we buy.
